Cividale del Friuli
CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI
Julius Caesar founded Cividale in 50 BC. with the name of Forum Iulii: today, Cividale del Friuli is one of the most evocative municipalities in eastern Friuli, in the province of Udine.
Walking through its streets is like immersing yourself in history: it is possible to visit the Lombard temple (www.tempiettolongobardo.it), which represents an extraordinary testimony of early medieval architecture. It is accessed from Piazza San Biagio via an hanging walkway that offers a pleasant panoramic view of the Natisone river; as well as the legendary Devil’s bridge, a stone bridge from 1440, 22.50 meters high. Also worth visiting are the treasure of the Cathedral, the adjacent Christian Museum and the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle. Furthermore, every year in July Cividale comes alive thanks to the event called Mittelfest, an important international event in the Central European area. The schedule on the website: www.mittelfest.org.
The city can be reached by car from the A4 Venice-Trieste motorway, Udine Sud exit, or from the SS. 54 Udine-Cividale.
